I write as a constituent—and as a physician—to express my support for single-payer national health insurance, and to thank you for co-sponsoring H.R. 1976, the “Medicare for All Act of 2021.” As a physician, I see the tragic results of our health care crisis every day. Millions of Americans are uninsured, and even those with insurance face rising costs and deteriorating coverage, forcing them to delay or skip needed care. More than three-quarters of the nearly 1 million Americans bankrupted by medical bills annually had insurance when they got sick. Improved Medicare for All would save enough on administrative paperwork—more than $600 billion per year—to provide comprehensive coverage to everybody in the U.S, along with full choice of doctor and hospital. By eliminating the insurance company middlemen, a single-payer program would control the health expenses that threaten our economy and demonstrate a renewed commitment to justice, equity, and democratic values. Your leadership on this issue is appreciated, but there is even more work to be done. I encourage you to feature the Medicare for All Act prominently on your website, join the Medicare for All Caucus, push for dedicated hearings on H.R. 1976 in committees of jurisdiction, and fight back against half-measures like a corporate-friendly public option that would barely scratch the surface of our health care crisis. We cannot wait to enact fundamental health care reform. Please continue to fight for H.R. 1976 knowing that two-thirds of the American public (and a growing majority of physicians) support improved Medicare for All.
