I write as a constituent—and as a physician—to express my support for single-payer national health insurance, and to thank you for co-sponsoring H.R. 3421, the “Medicare for All Act of 2023.” As a physician, I see the tragic results of our health care crisis every day. Millions of Americans are uninsured, and even those with insurance face rising costs and deteriorating coverage, forcing them to delay or skip needed care. This situation is certain to get worse in the coming months as states prepare to drop up to 15 million Americans from Medicaid. Health coverage doesn't have to be so precarious. Improved Medicare for All would save enough on administrative paperwork—more than $600 billion per year—to provide comprehensive coverage to everybody in the U.S, along with full choice of doctor and hospital. By eliminating the insurance company middlemen, a single-payer program would control the health expenses that threaten our economy and would demonstrate a renewed commitment to justice, equity, and democratic values. Your leadership on this issue is appreciated, but there is even more work to be done. I encourage you to feature the Medicare for All Act prominently on your website, join the Medicare for All Caucus, and fight back against privatization schemes like REACH and Medicare Advantage that threaten the future of public health care in the U.S. We cannot wait to enact fundamental health care reform. Please continue to fight for H.R. 3421 knowing that two-thirds of the American public (and a growing majority of physicians) support improved Medicare for All.
