As pediatricians, we demand single-payer Medicare for All
We, the undersigned pediatricians and pediatricians in training, strongly support publicly-financed, universal, national health care (aka: “single-payer Medicare for All”).
Our patients need a health care system that is not plagued by inequities, coverage gaps, uncertain access, unaffordable high costs, and medical debt. They deserve a system that does not put profits before care, resulting in worse health outcomes and tragic consequences for the children and families we serve.
We furthermore affirm that the whole family—everybody—deserves health care, and that as physicians we are bound to seek the best health care for all.
Finally, we must also address the intolerable administrative burdens and moral injury we physicians suffer under the established structure. A well-designed single-payer / Medicare-for-All system is the way to solve these problems.
We urge the AAP to develop a plan to educate its membership about, and begin advocacy for, a publicly-financed, universal, national health care system (single-payer / Medicare-for-All) as quickly as possible.
